Immersive Hyperreal Soundscapes – Paula Fairfield’s ‘Ocean of Tears’ world premiere plus special guests

Paula Fairfield, the ten times Emmy-nominated and award-winning sound designer behind Game of Thrones and Lost, is working with the University of Greenwich and L-Acoustics on a project engaging space as a key compositional parameter, to immerse and envelop audiences in rich new worlds of sound.

Newly appointed as a visiting Professor at the University, Paula presents the world premiere of her finished piece, ‘Ocean of Tears’, alongside work by sound artist and electroacoustic composer Brona Martin and University of Greenwich academic Dr Andrew Knight-Hill.

All of the works have been composed using 3D sound technologies to creatively adapt and explore immersive spaces through composition. They will be performed in two public concerts on the 24-channel L-ISA Ocean installation at L-Acoustics UK premises in Highgate.

L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound by L-Acoustics is an object-based mixing technology which allows composers to work with up to 96 audio inputs in ultra-high definition to present audio in new and creative ways. Each sound can be positioned, moved and stretched to create an impression of 360 degree envelopment.

“We’re always looking to innovate in sound design here at the university,” explains Dr. Andrew Knight-Hill. “We are delighted to bring our skills and knowledge of sonic creativity to help refine and define what’s possible with L-ISA technology. It’s great to not only be testing the limits of this technology within the university, but to also be able to collaborate with high-profile figures like Paula Fairfield and Brona Martin, both of whom are leaders in their respective areas.”

Paula Fairfield adds, “Having previously worked with students and staff at the University of Greenwich through their outstanding Sound Design program, I’m thrilled to be returning to collaborate with them to bring my sound work ‘Ocean of Tears’ to London audiences. I can’t wait for people to hear what we have been doing and to share this via the L-ISA Technology at the upcoming summer concerts. It really will be something special.”

Twelve compositions will be showcased at two concerts with the composers, taking place L-Acoustics’ Immersive Sound Art gallery in Highgate.
