Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) is a ballet and orchestral work by the Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes. It caused a sensation when it premiered in Paris on 29 May 1913 due to its avant-garde nature, but is today considered to be one of the most influential works of the 20th century.
The work is performed by Les Siècles, a Paris-based orchestra which plays each repertoire on appropriate period instruments. For this recording, the orchestra uses French instruments from the early 20th century, recreating the sound and the colors of the orchestra that premiered the piece at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris.
